'Drive' - Our Generation's 'Pulp Fiction'

Okay, don't get mad at me. Many people will get straight up mad just hearing any film getting compared to Tarantino's masterpiece. I'll get to this comparison in a few. It's been three weeks this week since I first saw Nicolas Winding Refn's film; I also saw it again last week. Both times, I've been meaning to write a review about this film. I asked myself how I would go in on writing a review for this film? Do I rate it? Do I just talk about it? What do I do? Fuck it, I'll just try to talk you through this little piece of pulp masterpiece.

New Girl breaks out old tricks

One episode down, and New Girl is already playing old tricks.

Zooey Deschanel’s new sitcom on Fox has her portraying a loveably dorky girl complete with bangs and oversize eyeglasses. After only a few minutes of screen time, you may be wondering why this sweet, silly girl seems so darn familiar. It’s because we’ve met before, in every role Miss Deschanel has ever assumed. Of course, each character had their own variations and individual quirks—Summer in 500 Days of Summer liked Ringo Starr! Kat in Weeds was wanted for arson!—the concept remains the same: offbeat babe with a vintage bike.

Now before I continue, I’d like to clarify that I’m not lamenting this character archetype. It may have turned into a bit of a shtick, but it’s a shtick that suits Deschanel, and I like it. I eat that shit up every time. I’ve suffered through countless shitty romantic comedies just to see Deschanel do her Manic Pixie Dream Girl routine, and I’ve enjoyed it every time, without shame. Okay- with a minimal amount of shame.

The rest of the cast includes two immigrants from ABC’s sweet and underrated Happy Endings: Damon Wayans, Jr. and Max Greenfield, both tremendously funny men who seem to have a contractual obligation to remove their shirts onscreen as much as possible. Mary Elizabeth Ellis also makes an appearance, known to viewers of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia as The Waitress, playing the ex-girlfriend of Jake Johnson’s character. It’s nice to see her on network TV again after the cancellation of her short lived NBC sitcom Perfect Couples.

This is not the episode to judge the series by. It was messy to say the least, and the dialogue was rather stilted. However, as far as pilots go, it was relatively painfree. Pilots are hard. Just ask Tina Fey.

My final call would be to give it half a season or so, and the quality should improve. It definitely has the potential. All of the ingredient of a hit show are in place: a funny cast, a prime time TV spot, and writers who appeared to have graduated high school. If all else fails, they’ve still got Zooey D, because when push comes to cancellations, cute and quirky saves the day, every time.

Accio tissues

It's Sunday. Or Monday, possibly Tuesday. It's either early morning or twilight, it's hard to tell. I hope that you'll forgive me for my isolated manner and scattered mind. I'm suffering from an acute case of Post-Potter Depression.

The Best Albums of 2011... So Far

This year is halfway done. Weird. This year already seems different than last year. WAY DIFFERENT. For the first time, the top 5 is not surrounded by huge stars (e.g. Kanye West, Gorillaz, LCD Soundsystem, Big Boi, Arcade Fire), but it's surrounded by mostly newcomers. This year's list includes artists that are releasing new stuff on a big label or just new stuff altogether. I'm here to bring you the 20 of the year... so far. (P.S.: No description really. At least not 'till the end of the year. Until then, stare at the picture and download it.)

List starts after the jump.

Where In The World Is Earl Sweatshirt?

Hey people, haven't blogged in a while. Fuck it. Big news here and the shit is fucking WEIRD. Earl Sweatshirt has been spotted. Sort of. Apparently, Complex did some research and found out the whereabouts of the Odd Future member. And, honestly, this looks legit. And sketchy. More after the break.

Rareware And The N64 Era

Many people who grew up playing video games in the 90's might remember this little logo. Rareware is a British developer that develops games for Microsoft ever since Microsoft bought the company from Nintendo back in 2002. In the past couple of years, this company has been known to periodically work on games like Perfect Dark Zero, Grabbed By The Ghoulies, Viva PiƱata, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, and Kinnect Sports. All these games obviously don't hold up to the company's entries on the N64. With this little countdown of sorts, I will countdown the 5 most important Rareware/N64. In no particular order, that is. Videos and descriptions after the jump.

Put This In Your Ears: How Did This Get Made?

Ever wonder how so many terrible films get made? So does Paul Scheer (Human Giant, The League), Jason Mantzoukas (The League), and June Diane Raphael (Flight of the Concords, Party Down). So much so, they decided to make a podcast about it. How Did This Get Made? just started around December of 2010 and has slowly released two episodes every month. If i'm correct, Paul mentioned about doing one once a week on a recent episode but I might be mistaking. Anyways, I highly recommend it. So far the films they have talked about were All About Steve, Battlefield Earth, Old Dogs, The Last Airbender, Season Of the Witch, and Burlesque. I have to say that the best moments came in during the explanation of All About Steve. Just get it for free on iTunes. Go and Enjoy.

Another Beastie Boys Post?

Here it is! The trailer for the new short film Fight For Your Right - Revisited. This film was released a while back, during the Sundance Film Festival and now everyone will get to see it. But how? Online, for sure. My guess, on the deluxe edition of Hot Sauce Committee Pt.2. Who knows. We'll wait and see. Until then, take in the trailer and try to find Mr. Shwartzman.

Hmmmmmmm....... DROOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPP

UPDATE: EMI SHUT DOWN EVERY VIDEO WITH THIS SONG. SORRY. JUST GO TO blog.beastieboys.com AND CLICK ON THE LINK TO PLAY THIS SONG. AGAIN, SORRY, FOLKS.

So the Beastie Boys are back and it feels like it's the nineties once more! This is the new song off The Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 (Pt. 1 is yet to be released due to MCA's ongoing health issues) and the song itself seems to be quite funky. How funky, might you ask? I downloaded a few albums and this song today and I've only heard one song since. This track reminds me of their 1998 album Hello Nasty. And I mean that in a good way. Be sure to check this song out. Download it if you dig it. Then, wait for May 3, 2011 for this and more songs to be released online and on CD via The Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2.
Until then, here's Biz Markie.
